Trail Rides

About the Rides

Where are they?

Stretching over 45 acres, our scenic riding trails wind through quiet woodlands, a shallow creek, and open fields and hills. Every ride is unique, following a slightly different route to provide variety and spontaneity for horses and riders. Tired of walking-only rides? We can pick up the pace occasionally based on the experience and comfort of the riders. All trail rides are guided.

Who can come?
All ages and ranges of experience are welcome. We will match you with a well-trained horse who knows the trails and responds to your commands. Not comfortable on horseback? No problem—beginners are provided with a few minutes of instruction in a training ring before we start on the trail. We emphasize a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable experience for horse and rider.

What do I wear?

There’s no specific dress requirement, but here are a few suggestions:

  • Dress comfortably.
  • Wear long pants or jeans.
  • Wear riding boots or closed-toed shoes. Sneakers are fine.
  • Safety helmets are not provided or required but are encouraged.

Horse Training

Our Training Philosophy

At Black Horse Run, we realize that every horse is unique. By carefully learning your horse’s individual personality and abilities, we tailor each training session to meet your horse’s specific needs and help him reach his full potential.

In order to better communicate with your horse, we use natural training methods advocated by recognized horse trainers such as Lyons, Anderson, Roberts, and Parelli. Our goal is not to “break” your horse, but rather to channel his energy into an effective partnership with his rider. We emphasize a safe, comfortable training experience to create a better working relationship between you and your horse.

Areas of Training

We cover all aspects of basic, intermediate and advanced training, from starting young horses to refining experienced ones. Areas of training include:

  • Starting under saddle.
  • Basic ground work, including handling, commands, and manners.
  • Safe exposure to the challenges of trail riding, with its sights, sounds, obstacles, and surprises.
  • Basic to intermediate Western riding techniques.
  • Refining gaits (for gaited horses).

Options and Prices

Extended Training
Leave your horse at our farm for an extended period of time, from a week to a month. Our most popular option is a 30-day training period, which includes additional riding time to reinforce training. Boarding fees and training are included in the total cost.

Individual Sessions
Request individual training sessions for your horse. Options include training with horse only or joint sessions with you and your horse.

Prices
Prices vary according to length of the stay or session and the number of participants (horse only or joint session with horse and owner). Please contact us for more information.
